Midterm Reflection
I feel as though my voice has weakened as the weeks have gone by. I
started off this semester using a conversational and reflective tone. My
favorite piece I’ve written thus far is The Troubles That Lie Behind FindingYour Voice as a Digital Marketer. I love
this piece because I’m speaking from the heart and as a professional who’s
facing real issues. The words are genuine and authentic.
As the semester progresses, the writing assignments become more
focused on my beat. I can tell that although I’m providing valid facts to
position myself as an expert in the digital marketing field, my writing has
lost the conversational tone and personal touch.
I’ve turned into a reporter, spewing out facts, providing no opinions
of my own and sharing no personal experiences. I chose to focus my beat on the
same theme of my master’s capstone in hopes to acquire credible research articles
and practice writing in my voice. My capstone is a white paper focusing on the
history, present, and future of digital marketing trends. My goal is to get it published
in the Journal of Digital & Social Media Marketing.
It would be easy for me to just change beats and dedicate the rest of
the semester to focusing on the life of a millennial. That’s a topic that I
have a personal connection with and one that would revive my conversational tone.
However, I need to identify my voice which I’m using to write my white paper
this fall. Therefore, I’m going to continue with my original beat, incorporating my
conversational tone and personal experiences within all future posts.
My goal by the end of this semester is to identify the voice I will
use for my capstone and for future blog pieces written outside of this class. I
want to position myself as an industry thought leader, and if I’m going to
succeed I need to identify my voice and integrate my personal opinions into
every piece of writing. I can’t be an encyclopedia. I want my readers to be
interested in the topics I discuss and my personal insight on the matter. I
want them to leave every article with newfound knowledge and a craving for more
of my writing.
The pressure is on. The challenge accepted.

ReplyDeleteI love that you are sticking to your beat. I think, as this is your capstone topic, it is important to stick to and explore as you said. I agree that you should explore more informal ways of discussing your topic the second half of this semester as you probably won't have as much freedom of voice writing your capstone. I'm looking forward to what you share with us the rest of the semester. I always find your posts informative!
